Springbrook, Vose and Bassel Homes From 1916 to 1920: A Century of Plumbing Behind Your Tile
The Aluminum Company of America built, owned and maintained Alcoa's worker housing, streets and utilities. About 150 homes went up in 1916 in the Bassel and Hall communities. Another 700 to 800 followed between 1917 and 1920 in Bassel and Springbrook. Babcock Land and Lumber built about 200 in Vose.
In 1919, Alcoa had the highest share of homes with indoor plumbing in Tennessee. That was a point of pride. It means some plumbing in these houses can be a century old. The fix is to open the wall where moisture shows. Check supply lines and drains before anything new goes in.
Hall Community Homes: When the Bathroom Began as a Back Porch Toilet
The city's booklet covers the smaller homes built for workers in the Hall community. Many had only an enclosed toilet on the back porch. They did have running water and electricity. If your house is there, the bathroom inside may have been added later in whatever space was left. That is often why the door hits the tub.
Tub to Shower Conversion Alcoa TN in a Tight Bassel Bathroom: What Fits and What Does Not
The drain position, the door swing and the wall behind the tub decide whether a walk-in shower fits. We measure at the estimate, and you hear the answer that day.
A Bathroom Contractor Alcoa TN Can Reach Along Hall Road, Louisville Road and Alcoa Highway
State Route 35 follows Hall Road. State Route 334 follows Louisville Road. US-129, known as Alcoa Highway or Airport Highway, runs toward Knoxville. Pellissippi Parkway connects Alcoa with west Knoxville. The Little River runs through the eastern part of town. The city's ZIP code is 37701.
Streets tell you the neighborhood. Nobel, Perkins, Remsen, Dalton, Boyle and Maury in old Springbrook honor engineers and scientists. Maple, Locust, Oak, Birch and Cedar in Vose are named for wood. A 3-mile Maryville-Alcoa Greenway section finished in 1998 links Springbrook Park with Maryville's Bicentennial Greenbelt Park.

Humid Foothills and 47.5 Inches of Rain: Fans, Waterproofing and the Mold You Do Not See
Alcoa sits in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains. The climate is humid subtropical, with about 47.5 inches of rain a year. Moisture is part of life here. So the work behind the finished surface matters. We build shower walls with a waterproof layer under the tile and recommend a fan that vents outside.
We cannot promise mold never returns, but ventilation and sound waterproofing lower the risk a lot.
Permits at 223 Associates Boulevard, Power From the City Electric Department and Water From City Crews
The City of Alcoa planning and codes office is at 223 Associates Boulevard, (865) 380-4730. Its plumbing permit application, revised 10/08/25, lists fixture counts including bathtubs and showers. The applicant swears the work will follow the 2018 International Plumbing Code. It is void after 180 days.
The City of Alcoa Electric Department serves the town, and city water crews handle the mains. Whether your job needs a permit depends on the work. We check first, and our permits page explains how.

July 28, 2025: A Hall Road Water Main Break Left Hall Community Homes Without Water
Scene. WATE reported that a large water main broke on Hall Road in Alcoa on Monday, July 28, 2025. City of Alcoa water crews were on site by about 7:20 a.m. and one lane of Hall Road closed.
Problem. Most homes in the Hall Community were affected. Water came back on around 2 p.m.
Tension. Residents may have seen muddy water at first. A bathroom with old supply lines meets that sediment first, at the fixtures.
What We Did. We did not work on that repair and claim nothing about it. A careful crew locates the shutoff first. After an outage, it flushes lines at the fixtures. It checks aerators and valves for debris before reconnecting new work.
Outcome. New fixtures start clean instead of clogged.
Lesson. Any bathroom renovation Alcoa TN owners plan on an old line should begin with the shutoff and a flush.

Can you work on a Springbrook or Vose house in Alcoa that old?
Yes, we can work on them. Older Alcoa houses mean more surprises behind walls. Bathroom Remodeling Knoxville expects layers. We tell you what we find before continuing. The plan changes only with your yes. You see the written warranty before work starts.
My Hall community bathroom in Alcoa is tiny. Can it take a walk-in shower?
Often it can, though the drain position and door swing decide it. Many of the smaller Hall homes began with a back porch toilet. So the bathroom inside may be tight. We measure at the free estimate and tell you the same day whether the shower fits.
Will old pipes in my Alcoa house have to be replaced?
Maybe. We cannot know until the wall is open, and Alcoa houses from 1916 to 1920 may have original plumbing. If pipes need replacing, we show you and explain the options. The plan changes only with your yes. So you never pay for surprises unseen.
Do I need a permit for a bathroom remodel in Alcoa?
It depends on the work. The City of Alcoa planning and codes office takes plumbing permit applications that list bathtubs and showers as fixtures. We check with it before planning. Then we tell you what applies to your Alcoa job. Our permits page explains the steps.
Does humidity affect how you build a shower in Alcoa?
Yes, it does. Alcoa gets about 47.5 inches of rain a year in a humid subtropical climate. Bathroom Remodeling Knoxville builds shower walls with a waterproof layer under the tile and recommends a fan that vents outside. That lowers the risk of hidden moisture.
Do you serve both Alcoa and Maryville?
Yes, we serve both. The towns run together, since Alcoa began as North Maryville. The visit works the same way in each: a call, a free in-home estimate, a written plan, and no obligation. Alcoa is ZIP code 37701, and Maryville has its own page.
Who answers when I call about bathroom work in Alcoa?
A person at our Knoxville office answers (865) 298-9333, Monday to Saturday. Tell them you are in Alcoa and what the bathroom needs. The in-home estimate is free, carries no obligation, and nobody pressures you to decide on the call itself.
How long will my Alcoa bathroom be closed?
It depends on the room and on what we find behind the walls. You get the number of days in the written plan before work starts. So you can arrange around it. Tell us about school drop offs or shifts in Alcoa and we plan noisy work around them.
